Please check back in the fall for 2025 updates

The Special Kids Rodeo is designed to provide kids with special needs the chance to experience Roots N’ Boots in a safe and supportive event.

Roots N’ Boots Queen Creek is excited to again host a Special Kids Rodeo (SKR) featuring fun cowboy activities just for special kids!

The free event is open to children from 5 years old through High School, who are receiving special education services through their local schools and/or Arizona Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) providers.

SKR is scheduled for Friday, March 15, 2024 from 9am until 1pm rain or shine at Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Center located at 20464 E Riggs Rd, Queen Creek, AZ 85142 (directions). All activities will take place under cover and on a hard-packed dirt surface that is wheelchair friendly.

There is no charge for your child to participate in SKR, but parking is $5 per vehicle. No pre-registration is required for individuals, and groups need to contact us at skr@friendsofhorseshoepark.org to coordinate an arrival time.

It warms my heart that the children will have an opportunity for a true rodeo experience.

Required Forms

If you are a group or school, registration for each child is required, but individuals need only come to the event during the activity hours to participate.

Please fill out an application and waiver for each child with special needs and bring it with you to the rodeo!

If you have more than one child with special needs, a separate waiver is required for each child, and add a note that they are siblings. Your child must have a completed and signed waiver to participate.

Questions can be sent to skr@friendsofhorseshoepark.org

NOTE: a waiver and application must be completed for each SKR participant

Application and Waiver for 2024 are available!

All SKR Rodeo buckaroos will gather at the SKR Rodeo Contestant area to be greeted and partnered with a buddy to assist them in completing activities as they journey down “Rodeo Road.” Children move from one station to another enjoying multi-sensory activities.

Waivers are a required item so don’t forget to bring yours!

The various opportunities are described below.

Activities (typical, but may change)

Feed Store

At these stations each child will be able to touch and smell different feeds that are given to rodeo livestock and experience everyday tools used by cowboys and cowgirls to take care of their horses. To encourage the child to dig into the feed, a prize will be buried in the feed and they will receive their own “stock” after grooming to keep.

Tack Room

Our local SASI riding group will educate each buck a roo on the importance of live stock feed, what they like, what kind of equipment is needed an why. Each participant will be able to sit in a saddle and touch and smell different livestock feeds and groom a miniature pony.

Buckaroo Picture

A photographer will be available to take photos of each participant with our own Roots N’ Boots Royalty.

Cowboy Camp

What could be more like the old west than sitting around a campfire singing songs?

Barrel Races

Giddy Up! Each special cowpoke will complete a smaller pattern just like the barrel racers do!

Bull Dogging

“Hold on Cowboy!” Experience the rush of taking down a 600lb Steer! Don’t worry about your little buckaroo, these steers are made out of plastic!

Roping Pen

Cowpokes can try their hand at roping a steer. Think it may be tricky for your child? Never fear, they will be given pointers to make them the next champions!

Branding

Each rodeo participant will get to create their own brand and understand why branding our livestock is so important.

Additional Activities

These activities are open to the family of SKR participants

Meet the Queens

Meet the Roots N’ Boots Rodeo Queen Court! Get your picture with them and their autograph! Throughout the event, these ladies as well as our PRCA bull fighters and rodeo announcer Dan Fowlie, and other Special Guests will be on hand to interact with the kids – giving the event a true cowboy flair!

Petting Zoo and Pony Rides

Smiling faces, laughter and adorable animals are what you will find when you check out our Petting Zoo! Sponsored by Passey Farms, entry into the Petting Zoo is free! You may also have the opportunity to purchase feed to give to the animals. Your little one – and even the older folks in your group – will enjoy getting up close and personal with animals such as goats, chickens, and perhaps an alpalca!

Right next door to the Petting Zoo you will also find the Pony Rides! For just $5 your little wrangler can ride a gentle equine friend, which will be just their size!

Located just outside the southeast corner of the covered Arena #1, the petting zoo and pony rides will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – see our Schedule for hours of operation.
